... und wo sind die Denkmäler für "Heldinnen" ?

Installation in public space, 1989
in the context of the project Kunst auf Zeit, Gruppe 77, Graz

[ ... und wo sind die Denkmäler für "Heldinnen" ?]
While women are almost absent from history and were invisible in public during the time of the bourgeoisie in the 18th/19th century, there are countless monuments from this period for men who were to be honored and put on a pedestal, visible from afar. For example, the monument to admiral and war hero Wilhelm Tegetthoff (1827-1871) on Tegetthoffplatz in Graz.
The monument is flanked by allegories for victory, glory, Mars and Neptune and glorifies the power of the hero. For the duration of the project Kunst auf Zeit by Gruppe 77, these figures took up residence in the bus shelter of the tram stop. While waiting, passers-by had the opportunity to take a closer look at the figures, which symbols surround the monument and what they stand for.
