Previous background

A similar project, Daily Game, was realised during a 3-month stay abroad as an artist in residence in Canada. At that time, the focus was on exploring the socio-cultural living spaces of women and capturing cultural inscriptions in cities of different sizes - from the 2500-inhabitant community to the multicultural metropolis of Toronto.
In contrast to this, the "Everyday Play" in the home town of Kapfenberg is the observation of a play in the familiar town that played a decisive role in personal socialisation.

Conception and definition of the "rules of the game" of the "Daily Game" in Kapfenberg

  • Defined structure through the selection of locations
11 locations represent the dense social structure of Kapfenberg using the example of communication hubs and educational centres. These are schools where communication, culture-forming and preserving information transfer takes place, where tradition and innovation are brought together. They range from the oldest primary school - the original form of the comprehensive school that is still desirable today - to the specific education provided by the technical college.

  • Snapshots - determined by chance
The structure was defined by determining the locations, selected according to their function. The place implicitly determines who is there; in addition to the communicative function of places, they are a psychological component of a personal living space. Chance ultimately determined the subjective observation of the participants at their locations. The position chosen for taking the snapshots, always from the side, made it possible to depict the dynamics of the moment.
The snapshots of women, men, young people and children were taken over a period of two months in spring 2006 on different days and at different times. After the snapshot was taken, all participants were asked for permission to publish their names, occupations, dates of birth and contact addresses. The willingness to participate in the "Daily Game" was high, an infinite number of photos were taken, but only a limited number could be published.

  • Selection of 33 photos - how life plays out
The interplay of fixed structures, chance and subjective, personal criteria determines how decisions are made. Decisions that would lead to a different result in a different place, at a different time - just the way life plays out.

  • Time frame - 1 year later
By the end of 2007, 3 life-size photos will be on display at each of 11 locations. In addition, all 33 images - of people living, working or in education in Kapfenberg - will be publicly displayed on flags in the most public place, the square in front of the town hall. Flags that stand as a visible sign of respect for the everyday activities of people in the town of Kapfenberg. The game leads to a dynamic win-win situation - collective benefit in human-centred progress
