What N. Hartmann had in mind when he established the distinction between Art Beauty and the Beautiful was artificiality created by the "anma§endes Bewu§tsein" as the criteria to define art. Th. W. Adorno has shifted the emphasis in art from aesthetic beauty to truth. His claim is not for essential but for social truth, though.
The variation of contexts , in this sense, derives from an experimental methodology. The consequences of this variation on the object should be immediately experienced and not only grasped through reconstruction.
The reversal of the variation of contexts is the methodology of W/BB: while the context remains the same, the object varies and thus knowledge about a social and political situation is generated. Art, then, is the reversal of the variation of contexts to produce an artificial situation which in turn is meant to reveal social truth. The work transgresses the field of 'social sculpture' which still implies - due to the term itself- an affinity to an traditional approach to art.
WBB-Austria frames female artists and their objects which have been defined as 'art' in a sleeping car as the exhibition's location on a scheduled journey from Graz to Petersburg: 'wrong' objects in the 'right' place and thus an artificial situation. The journey took place physically and was yet virtual in its own sense. S/he who is moving thus far beyond borders into an artificially produced social situation ceases to exist. There is no criteria of the non-artificial situation and no law that is applicable to her/ his non-existence as juristic person.
This journey frames art as an artificial situation. It went beyond the borders that divide the legitimate from the illegitimate; and it generated the very knowledge about social and political systems that what is provoked by "presumptuous behavior" is only virtual according to the 'generally accepted' consciousness
